This Edgar Award-nominated short story featuring New Orleans music historian/detective Nick Travers was written nearly 15 years ago -- and then forgotten by author Ace Atkins. The story was rescued from an old floppy disc and first published in 2008, in a special, 10th anniversary edition of Crossroad Blues. To Atkins' surprise, that edition earned an Edgar Award nomination for the forgotten Nick Travers tale. The story shows Nick at his best in New Orleans, at JoJo's Blues Bar, helping an old friend, challenging the powerful, and getting in way over his head.

I've grown to be a big Ace Atkins fan over time. I first stumbled onto a few of his early releases by accident. Over time I've read through most of his books. Now I can't wait until the next Quinn Colson book is out (July 2015). I was scrolling through Amazon to check the release date on a new book and came across this short story. What a great little gem. Nicely written with near perfect atmospherics for nitty gritty New Orleans. His characters are authentic and brought to us in living color. The tight path through this short story shows yet another of Atkins skills. I gave this five stars for what it achieves so perfectly: the good short story is growing harder to find, LFDGD nails the short form; Atkins was willing to release one of his older stories and I felt like I had stumbled onto Atkins for the first time again.

Last Fair Deal Gone Down Nick Travers edition by Ace Atkins Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

Ace Atins is quite a writer. He has mastered the art of fiction, having created two outstanding protagonists, Nick Travers and Quinn Colson, and has been selected by the Robert B. Parker estate to carry on Parker's most famous character, Spenser. He has also mastered the art of "faction," fiction based on fact, such as his outstanding "Wicked City, a story of Phenix City and the gambling, lawlessness and violence that permeated the small Alabama mill town bordering Columbus, Ga. in the fities.

It all began with this book, this short story, "Last Fair Deal Gone Down," in which Nick Travers bursts on the literary scene for the first time.

This was Atkins' first story, one that stayed in his desk (or in his computer) for 18 years or so, until with its Shorts series began looking for good short stories.

Thus, this story has come to light, and that's a good thing. This is a story that deserves to be read. It's much too good to remain on a computer or in a filing cabinet.

If you like Ace Atkins don't miss it; if you like Nick Travers don't miss it.

And if you are looking for a good writers and good characters to follow, try Ace Aktins and his Nick Travers and Quinn Colson series. You'll be glad you did.
I love a good mystery, but foul language is a real affront to me. After the first few chapters, I decided my time would be better spent elsewhere. It was my first time to read an Ace Atkins book and I had expected better from an Auburn man. Disappointed.
Ace Atkins has the knack of getting right to the heart of the matter. No unnecessary language needed to tell the story.
Love Love Love Ace Atkins characters and story lines. Keeps my interest to the point I find it hard to put the book down.
Good, quick PI yarn.
Interesting
Only reason I limited this to 4 stars is because it was too short! Ace Atkins is a great teller of stories, I never want his books to end.
