This is the concluding story of the Chronicles of the Shifter Directive. Since I read each book back to back, I had the story straight and the characters. In this book everything twists. It's a different world and reality because Phoenix couldn't give up his mate, Rachen. You see Rachen dies, he gives up his life to save the world from the Ancient Horror.

At first I was confused. I thought the sprites cast an illusion and a shifted reality was a result. Or an illusion that impacted one or two characters. But as the story progresses I realized this wasn't an elaborate illusion. It was all true. No, it wasn't set in the future or in the past. It was an alternate reality of what life *could* be like if The Great Sacrifice didn't happen.

While it was interesting, it was also hard to figure out. Part of that was the conclusion. So Phoenix's time shift was all a lesson. It was to show how important their mates are, how the Shifter Directive wasn't such a bad thing after all, that things could have been worse. Although I grasped all that, the characters in this story make decisions that impact their world and the future of all paranormal races. I mean the main characters are reeling from their experience, some remember it, some not, yet now they're thrust back 'to normal' and they're so caught up with their mates. . . I highly recommend this series and no you can not skip you need to start with book 1 or you will be completely lost. Every book connects and is an continuation from previous books. I love the true mates concept and this certainly has it. Also, it is different from normal shifter books that just focus on one type of shifter this series focus on paranormals as a whole. I was never bored every chapter holds you captive and the characters are so amazing you can feel their love and understand them
